Japan's capital is a patchwork of distinct neighborhoods, each with its own character — from the old-town lanes of Asakusa to the towers of Shinjuku. It's also the hub for every other trip on this site.

Highlights

Senso-ji, Asakusa

Tokyo's oldest temple, reached through the Kaminarimon gate and the snack stalls of Nakamise-dori.

Meiji Jingu

A forested Shinto shrine right next to Harajuku — a quiet escape minutes from the crowds.

Shibuya Crossing

The famous scramble; watch it from above at Shibuya Sky or a café window.

Tsukiji Outer Market

Morning street food: tamagoyaki, fresh sushi, grilled seafood.

Ueno Park

Museums, a zoo and Tokyo's busiest cherry-blossom viewing spot.

Shinjuku Gyoen

A spacious garden mixing Japanese, English and French landscape styles.

Getting there

  • From Narita Airport: Narita Express or Keisei Skyliner (about 1 hour).
  • From Haneda Airport: Keikyu Line or Tokyo Monorail (about 20–30 minutes).
  • Get a Suica or PASMO IC card — it works on almost all trains, buses and many shops.

Tips

  • Avoid trains at rush hour (7:30–9:30) if you have luggage.
  • Many museums close on Mondays.
  • Use Tokyo as a base for the day trips on this site.
